On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving this year Railroad Park in downtown Brookhaven will be boasting natural home-grown produce, fresh artisan breads, cheeses and butters and local honey.
All part of the Thanksgiving Farmers Market, these things and much more, including eggs, beef, cakes and pies, will be available for purchase.
The market starts at 7:30 a.m. and will continue until noon. 2014 has been the sixth year for the Farmers Market, and this will be the third year for the Thanksgiving Market.
“It’s a one day market usually the Tuesday before Thanksgiving,” MSU Extension Director Rebecca Bates said.
Bates has helped organize the market since the beginning and attributes a lot of the market’s success over the years to the market’s supporters and partners.
“It gives people in the community a chance to get out and purchase home-grown goods for Thanksgiving,” Bates said.
“I’m always excited about the Thanksgiving Market,” Patti Alderman, a devout vendor of the Farmer Market, said. “By the time of the market it’s been so long since the spring markets.”
Alderman said she will be selling an assortment of bread items, including sourdough, wheat bread and cinnamon rolls, egg custard and dip mixes all homemade.
All things for sale at the Thanksgiving Market will be homemade or natural. Bates said a lot of people are embracing the “Farm-to-Table movement and the importance of knowing their food and knowing their farmers.
Bates said regarding the success of the market, “you trust the source and the goods are as fresh as it could possibly be.”
Speaking of freshness, Bates shared that T & R Dairy will be selling their collection of milks at the market Tuesday.
“It’s pasteurized because its required by law, but it’s not homogenized. The cream still rises to the top and you have to shake it before you pour,” she said.
“We usually have a very good turnout,” Alderman said about the Thanksgiving Market. “It’s a fun time. I think the customers miss it as much as we do.”
Bates said the market will have some special guests exclusively for the kids. She, along with the Great Tea Company, will have a flock of turkeys who will likely become the mascots of this year’s Thanksgiving Market.
