Construction is grinding along on every campus in the Brookhaven School District. Every building from elementary to high school has received some type facelift.

“I am very pleased with the progress that is being made. Things are going pretty smoothly,” said Superintendent Ben Cox.

Cox said he expects all projects to be mostly completed by Christmas break.

The district will have new gym renovations, which are projected to be done in time for basketball season, and a new press box for Brookhaven High School; boilers for Mamie Martin, Lipsey and Mullins; new roofs and repairs for every school; and American with Disability Act improvements on the campuses which includes creating handicap accessible restrooms and an elevator in Alexander.

“You don’t want to sit back and not do anything because 10 years from now everything would have to be done all at one time,” said Cox. “With these projects and repairs we are able to get ahead of the game.”

Cox said none of the construction has interfered with classes or student activities.

“The maintenance supervisor, Greg Walker has done an outstanding job helping the district,” said Cox. “He is a true asset. He should take all the credit for the work being done.”

After the completion of these construction projects and repairs, Cox said the school will be looking to upgrade air conditioners, complete the remaining roof upgrades and retrofitting windows, doors and flooring. He said there is no new heavy construction coming up, but there will be repairs and improvements made on existing structures.
