Bogue Chitto coach Scott Leggett and his Lady Cats experienced a great year as they marched through the season and playoffs to capture their third 1A State Championship gold in five years.

Coach Leggett and his wife Denise knows what it take to build a successful softball program.

Bogue Chitto captured the Region 7-1A crown with a perfect 6-0 record. In the playoffs, the Lady Cats fought hard and clawed their way through earning an 8-2 record to finish 29-8 of the season.

In the state championship contest, the Lady Cats’ dropped a 15-9 decision in the opener Friday night, before rallying back to tie the series at 1-game apiece with a 8-7 victory. In Game Three, BC overcame exhaustion to win an exciting battle 8-7 to claim gold in the MHSAA fastpitch softball state tournament.

For this amazing accomplishment, Leggett has earned The Daily Leader’s All-Area Coach of the Year for 2014.

“It is an honor to be recognized as the All-Area softball coach of the year,” said Leggett. “We have a lot of great coach in this area. This is a very competitive area.”

Leggett presented his thoughts on his team’s amazing season. “We finished on a great note. The girls did a fantastic job representing BC on and off the field.

“The Lord has blessed us here at BC,” continued Leggett. “We know he is the reason for our success. I am so thankful that he has given Denise and I the opportunity to coach these girls.”

Leggett has several talented players who have stepped up and had a successful season. His starting lineup: Mattie Avants at centerfield, Christian Black at pitcher/flex, Alana Nettles at third base/pitcher, Daley Roberts at left field, Terrah Nelson at shortstop, Alexis Givens at first base, Colby Kirkland at second base, Zariah Matthews at catcher/flex, Mallory Allen at right field/catcher, and Jordan McKinney as the flex/third baseman.

Other members on the squad are Baileigh Jackson, Cherie Savoie, Jaide McKinney, Karly Leake, Reagan Kirkland, Marshonikique Blackwell, Katie Brumfield and Brooke Myers.

The team posted an overall battling average of .373 and accounted for 38 doubles and 286 RBIs.

Wallace, 39, shared his goals for next season. “We will like to stay on top. It is just not given to you.

“We know it will be a new season and everyone starts over,” stated Leggett. “We will definitely use our past experiences to help guide us throughout next season.”

Coach Leggett stated that he loves and enjoys the community support. “We have one of the greatest fan bases around. The Bogue Chitto fans, community and staff show enormous support. This is a great place to coach at.”

The future looks bright for Scott Leggett and his Lady Cats as they are preparing for the upcoming slowpitch softball season that will start in a couple months.
