This spring production includes dozens of MSA students serving as actors, choreographers and stage managers representing vocal, theatre, dance, media and visual arts departments, said Sarah Hamman, director of vocal music at MSA who is serving as director and music director for the show.

Several area businesses have partnered with MSA to promote the production. This week, customers can purchase SpongeBob-themed sugar cookies at Janie’s Pastry Shop, an Under the Sea Lotus specialty drink at Wild Fox Coffee, or choose from three specialty sodas at Sipps: Pineapple Under the Sea, Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks.

This is just the second spring musical MSA has presented. Last year it was “Tuck Everlasting” and Hamman chose “SpongeBob” this year for two reasons.

“We had the perfect junior class come in to do this show and it’s the 25th anniversary of ‘SpongeBob SquarePants,’” she said.

The Tony Award-winning “SpongeBob Musical” is based on the animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco and Plain White T’s,

The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimist and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends.

In “The SpongeBob Musical,” the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home. SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and proves the power of optimism really can save the world.

“I promise, this is a crazy, colorful, fun-loving show you just don’t want to miss,” Hamman said. “Make the drive, clear your schedule. Come have a laugh and see a high school production that is full of quality and professionalism. Not only has the cast worked so hard, but I have an amazing production team and terrific parents who give their all.”
