BROOKHAVEN — Junior Auxiliary members, an artist and Brookhaven firefighters worked to improve the conditions of the Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln County Saturday morning. The building is located at 213 South Second Street.

Work began on the revitalization project with internationally recognized artist Danielle Camp painting a mural on the side of the building. Camp is a graduate of Mississippi State University and a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Junior Auxiliary of Brookhaven Chapter President Whitney Clark said the work is just step one of a long process for the club. She explained other people will come in to redo the floors, build new cabinets and JA will get some new games for the children.

“We have a child welfare project that goes hand in hand with the Boys and Girls Club,” Clark said. “Our active members and our crown club girls come and volunteer twice a week to tutor children here. We inserted ourselves to have more of a presence. We plan to do art projects, educate them about food and exercise.”

Firefighters moved tables and cleaned parts of the building while JA members sorted supplies.

Shamarrick Butler donated his time to clean the building’s windows. Camp plans to add more artwork to the windows facing Second Street.

“We are trying to pick it back up. Nothing has been done to this building in a long time,” Clark said. “We are very excited, the mural started it off.”
