A 17-year-old has been killed, and another 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a Friday shooting at a McComb city park.

The victim has been identified by authorities as Gary Wayne Thompson III, a student at McComb High School. He was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he later died.

McComb Police arrested Kendric Cowart in connection with the shooting. He is charged with first-degree murder, according to MPD Chief Investigator David Cullom.

Cullom confirmed the shooting coincided with “Senior Skip Day” and McComb High School.

The incident is being investigated by the Pike County Sheriff’s Department and McComb Police Department.

The McComb School District issued the following statement on Facebook: “Our hearts and prayers are with the members of our school family who have been affected by recent events.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and to all who have been impacted by this tragedy,” said McComb School District Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Hicks. “We hold everyone affected close in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”
