You can vote today: Absentee voting is open in Mississippi

Published 2:30 pm Thursday, April 24, 2025

Brookhaven residents have two offices to vote for in the June 3 General Election. But anyone who can vote absentee does not need to wait until the first Tuesday of June to cast a ballot.

Just two contests have not been decided for the 2025-2029 term — mayor and alderman-at-large.

Current mayor Republican Joe Cox, nearing the end of his third term, is running for re-election. His challenger is once again Democrat hopeful Larry Jointer. Fewer than 30 votes separated the two men in the 2021 election. While it cannot be predicted how close the numbers will be this time, the race will be determined by how many people show up to the polls — either absentee or at the polls Election Day.

First-term Alderman-at-large Don Underwood, Republican, is challenged by Democrat Ronald L. Hines.

Any qualified elector — someone who is registered to vote in and lives in Brookhaven — who will not be able to vote in-person on General Election Day can vote absentee. If the person is a student or school employee, employed with the state Congress, permanently physically disabled (or their caregiver), age 65 or older, at work during election hours or “away from his or her residence within the municipality on election day for any reason” can vote absentee. The Secretary of State’s Office also permits any qualified voter who is temporarily living elsewhere to vote absentee by mail.

In-person absentee voters should visit the Brookhaven City Clerk’s Office 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Voter registration is also open until Tuesday, May 5, and should be completed in the Clerk’s Office, as well. The office will also be open Saturday, May 3, 8 a.m. until noon.

On Tuesday, June 3, polls will be open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. City officers’ terms begin Tuesday, July 1.

Where to vote

On Tuesday, June 3, voters will cast ballots according to the ward where they live. All ballots will have the offices of mayor, alderman-at-large, and the alderman of the respective ward — even though the individual ward seats were determined by the Primary Election.

In-person voting will take place at the following polling sites:

Ward 1 — Bi-Centennial Building, 200 Main St.

Ward 2 — Alexander Jr. High School Auditorium, 713 Beauregard St.

Ward 3 — Lincoln County Government Building, City Board Room, 301 S First St.

Ward 4 — Brookhaven Elementary School Auditorium, 300 S Church St.

Ward 5 — Brookhaven Recreation Department, Main Room, 689 Hwy. 51 N

Ward 6 — Mamie Martin School Room A3, 420 Vivian Merritt St.
