Students and staff at Lawrence County High School in Monticello have a new opportunity to increase both their physical activity level, and their number of books read.

Thanks to a generous donation from Lawrence County Hospital, an exercise bike, complete with PitPat app, magnetic resistance, and an activity tracker, was recently installed in the Lawrence County High School Library. It is part of “Read and Ride: An Active Lifestyles and Literacy Initiative.”

The bike also features a built-in stand that allows the user to rest their book or tablet securely in front of them, allowing them to read while exercising actively or passively. The bike is available for use by all students and staff at LCHS. A waiver, kept on file in the library, must be signed before using the equipment.

The project idea was first presented last school year by LCHS Librarian Gina Patrick to the Lawrence County School District Foundation. She had seen a similar project completed in another school district. Once approval was given to allow students to use the bike by signing a waiver, Lawrence County Hospital donated the funds to allow for the purchase.

“I want to express my gratitude to Lawrence County Hospital for their donation of the Read & Ride exercise bike to the LCHS Library and for their investment and support in our students here at Lawrence County High School. Thank you all so much!” said Patrick.

The donation reaffirms the hospital’s commitment to and ongoing support of the community they serve. Hospital Chief Executive Officer Phillip Langston stated, “Lawrence County Hospital is dedicated to the health, education, and success of our local students.”

Many students signed participation waivers before the bike arrived, Patrick said.

The LCSD Foundation is a non-profit arm of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, that works through donations to support LCSD student and staff achievement, scholarships, and other initiatives.
