Candidates for office in the City of Brookhaven faced off in Tuesday’s Primary Election. How did each fare? Did incumbents keep their seats for now, or will new faces be seen in the boardroom come July?
In the numbered wards, five board members kept their seats and one was upset in the vote.
The at-large alderman and mayor seats progress to June’s General Election.
Decided Tuesday
Ward 1 Alderman — Incumbent James Magee Jr. faced fellow Democrat James Vincent Payton. Taking 58% of the vote, Magee secured his place for the next term.
Ward 2 Alderman — Incumbent Shannon Moore was challenged by fellow Democrat Ann Wilson. With 66% of the vote, Moore also keeps his seat on the board.
Ward 3 Alderman — Charles Caston Sr., the Democrat incumbent, was met by fellow Dem Jennifer Howard-Tate. In the sole upset of the night, Howard-Tate won 54% of the vote. She will take Caston’s place on the board come July 1.
Ward 4 Alderman — Republican incumbent Jeff Henning faced no challengers, therefore winning the Primary and advancing to the General Election, where he will remain the sole candidate for this seat. He garnered 99% of the votes in his ward.
Ward 5 Alderman — Incumbent Republican Fletcher Grice was faced by Republican challenger Tristan Peavey. Grice won 63% of the vote, retaining his place on the board for another term.
Ward 6 Alderman — Incumbent Andre’ Spiller Sr., a Democrat, was met by two Democrat challengers in Alan Trey Henderson and Burnell Robinson Sr. Spiller won outright, with 65% of the vote. Robinson took 25% and Henderson 10%. Ward 6 was the only possibility of a runoff, so no Primary Runoff will be conducted in Brookhaven.
To be decided in June
Mayor — Republican incumbent Joe C. Cox is seeking his fourth term as mayor. Democrat Larry Jointer is the challenger. With no opponents in their respective parties, both Cox and Jointer won the Primaries and advance to the General Election.
Cox won 910 votes, 99% of the Republican Primary. Jointer secured 1,513 votes, 99% of the Democratic Primary.
Alderman-at-large — Republican incumbent Don Underwood was met by challenger Guy Orr in his party’s Primary. Underwood was the winner, with 53% of the Republican vote, and will advance to the General Election.
Two Democrat challengers also met in the Primary, Ronald L. Hines and Jeffrey L. Jordan, with Hines emerging as his party’s winner, taking 73% of the vote.
Hines will face Underwood in the General Election on June 3.
Thirty-seven percent of eligible voters participated in the Primary Election.
As of 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, seven ballots remained in the mail — one in Ward 1, two in Ward 2, and four in Ward 3. The above totals do not include affidavits. However, the outstanding ballots will not affect the final results of these races, according to Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield.
All results are unofficial until declared official by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office.
