BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County will once again conduct their household hazardous waste day to help keep the county clean. The cleanup event is typically held once every two years when the county is able to get a grant to help cover some of the expenses for the cleanup.

Bob Knight, Lincoln County Solid Waste and Litter Control Coordinator, informed the Lincoln County Board of Supervisors the cleanup day would be on April 19 this year. The one-day event will start at 8 a.m. and go to noon at the Lincoln Civic Center.

Paint, chemicals, batteries, gasoline, scrap metal, tires, fluorescent light bulbs, electronic waste, propane cylinders and appliances will be accepted. Items not accepted include explosives, radioactive materials, materials with PCBs, syringes, ammunition, lab chemicals, prescription drugs, household trash and no commercial waste.

People are asked to stay in their vehicles for safety. Scrap metal and tires should also be kept separate from chemical waste. This event is for Lincoln County residents only.

On April 26, May 3 and May 10, Keep Lincoln County Beautiful will hold its annual spring cleanup from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can take waste materials such as scrap metal, electronics, mattresses, furniture, white goods, porcelain, carpets and rugs to the Brookhaven Transfer Station at 463 County Farm Lane NE.

No scavenging will be allowed and people are asked once again to stay in their vehicles. Each load will be inspected and people are asked to separate items by type the best they can.

Only Lincoln County residents can drop waste off for the cleanup.

Knight provided a list of unacceptable items for the spring cleanup.

Tires, pain, oil, fuels, chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, hazardous waste, commercial rubbish, vegetative debris, construction materials, oilfield pipes, pressurized containers or metal drums will not be accepted.
