City of Brookhaven approves property demo list

Approximately one dozen properties are slated for tear-down and clean-up in Brookhaven over the coming months.

Tuesday in a public hearing, owners of published properties were given a opportunity to speak to the Board of Aldermen, Mayor Joe Cox, and City Inspector David Fearn. Letters had been sent to owners and/or family members concerning issues of safety and blight.

Only one owner appeared at the 6 p.m. meeting, but did not request leniency. She requested a little time to make certain everything that needed to be salvaged was removed from the property she had inherited from her grandmother, and to contact family regarding a vehicle on the property. But she gave her assent to the decaying home’s complete removal.

Fearn said a bill for the takedown would be sent to her, and the cost could be paid over time.

The City has $80,000 budgeted for removal of buildings that are falling down, when the owners cannot or refuse to take care of them. With the cost averaging more than $5,000 per property, that means 10-12 can be taken care of each fiscal year.

A total of 17 properties were on the list approved unanimously by the Board during the regular meeting that followed. As many as can be removed within the $80,000 budget will be taken care of, Fearn said.

Properties approved were:

1331 and 2241 Brignall Road (Ward 1)

907, 911 and 1001 East Cherokee Street (Ward 2)

853 Independence Street (Ward 1)
