New businesses don’t always want it widely known when they are considering moving into a new community or expanding.
The City of Brookhaven published a statement Monday on why the City and Chamber of Commerce do not comment on possible incoming business.
“It is necessary for local governments and the Chamber of Commerce to keep new, expanding and potential economic development in confidence until privately-owned businesses make an official announcement,” the statement reads.
This action protects confidentiality, controlled messaging, regulatory and legal concerns, and timing.
“Businesses often require confidentiality during initial discussions and negotiations to protect sensitive information and ensure that any potential issues or challenges can be addressed internally before the details are made public. Failure to maintain confidentiality, or to adhere to an NDA, can deter a business from entering or expanding in our community.
“Businesses understandably seek to control the narrative surrounding their announcements, ensuring that the message conveyed is accurate and aligned with their branding. An official statement allows them to present their plans in a way that reflects their objectives and strategic goals.
“At times, legal or regulatory requirements must be fulfilled before businesses can publicly announce its intentions. Premature disclosure may lead to legal complications or jeopardize agreements and economic development.
“Businesses may want to time the announcement to coincide with a significant event or launch, and premature disclosure could undermine the impact of its official release.”
The City and Chamber “honor the business’ wishes, uphold its agreements, and maintain a professional and ethical approach to ensuring sustained economic development” while waiting official statements to be released.
