Mississippi deputy shot, killed responding to call

A Mississippi sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Sunday while responding to a call in Terry, according to authorities.

Deputy Martin Shields, 37, of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office died after the Sunday night shooting, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Shields was responding to a domestic call at a home on Midway Road in Terry. Few other details on the circumstances were immediately released.

A man was found dead inside the residence, the sheriff’s office said. His identity and details of how he died were not released.

Shields had been employed by the sheriff’s office for about 9 months, but also had other law enforcement experience, authorities said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Law Enforcement Chief  Col. Jerry Carter expressed his sorrow over the news Monday afternoon.

“The loss of Deputy Shields is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make every day to protect our communities,” Carter said. “MDWFP stands in solidarity with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time. We honor Deputy Shields’ sacrifice and commitment to public safety. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and all those affected by this profound loss.”
