Brookhaven gang member charged with shooting man he met on dating app

A Brookhaven man has been arrested and charged with shooting another man he was meeting from a dating app.

Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m., Byram Police Department was notified by medical personnel at a local emergency room of a male patient who was being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound he sustained during an altercation in the 2500 block of Davis Road in the city limits of Byram. The shooting occurred around 5:45 p.m.

After an initial investigation by Byram detectives, 31-year-old Shakur Shaqawane McGee, of Brookhaven, was arrested Friday morning in Lincoln County with the assistance of the Brookhaven Police Department.

McGee reportedly had prior communication with the victim through the social media dating app “Tagged.”

McGee was transported to Hinds County, where he had an initial appearance in Byram Municipal Court on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a felon. He has an extensive criminal history for robbery, burglary, and weapon offenses, and is a verified member of the Vice Lords gang.

McGee is being held without bond in the Hinds County Detention Center.
