This week, fallen officer Troy Floyd was honored by Lincoln County Legislative members Rep. Becky Currie and Rep. Vince Mangold, along with others, with a presentation to Floyd’s widow, Sage.

“Today it was my honor to pay tribute to Troy Floyd in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Sage Floyd and her sweet family, pastor and friends attended this ceremony. It was bitter sweet for me as Troy was so special to all of us,” said Currie.

“Troy loved God and was a wonderful husband, father, law officer and a friend that passed too soon. Please pray for this family as they are hurting and still need us. This is the fourth law enforcement officer that I have honored since I have been in office that has been shot and killed in the line of duty. It is so senseless. We need to pay our law enforcement what they are worth and deserve. This job is too dangerous for them to struggle like they have to do. Thank you to Rep. Daryl Porter, Rep. Vince Mangold, Rep. Angela Cockerham, Rep. Sam Mims and Speaker Jason White for helping to welcome and comfort this family.”

A bill named Floyd after was introduced in the House on Jan. 16. Floyd was killed in the line of duty in August 2024 in Summit where he was an officer. Lincoln County mourned the loss of a native son in the days following.

Representatives Currie and Mangold were co-authors of the Troy Floyd Act, along with Rep. Sam Mims, Rep. Angela Cockerham and principal author Rep. Daryl Porter. Under the act, Mississippi Development Authority would be authorized to award grants to small municipalities (population of 3,000 or fewer) to obtain lifesaving equipment. Life Saving Equipment is defined in the bill as bullet proof vests, radio equipment, first aid supplies, wound treatment supplies and equipment. Awarded grant funds cannot exceed $50,000 to a singular municipality.

The act would have taken effect on July 1, 2025 if it passed. The bill was referred to municipalities and Appropriations A committees in the House, and died in committee on Feb. 4.
