BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County Board of Supervisor meetings have been calm the last year and a half. Emotions boiled over at a docket meeting Wednesday when District 1 Supervisor Jerry Wilson and Litter and Solid Waste Control Coordinator Bob Knight got into a yelling match.
Wilson, who is typically cheerful, patient and calm, had something to say directly to Knight following discussion about hazardous waste day and county wide cleanup. The supervisor alleged Knight was not doing his job by refusing to pick up limbs at his district barn.
“I have a pile of bushes and limbs you have ignored. You get around others and talk about my district and me. Whatever you have to say, talk to me,” Wilson said. “I have a pile of wood needing to be cleaned up and it is still building up.”
Knight took exception to Wilson’s allegations of not doing his job and called them a “damn lie.”
“How many times have you called me to pick up trash at someone’s home? My job is to pick up illegal dumps and keep the streets and waterways of this county clean,” Knight said. “I’ve been in your district picking up limbs and trees. I’m not going to your barn to fix a problem you created.”
District Five Supervisor Doug Falvey asked Wilson why he did not take the limbs to the dump to start with instead of adding another step to disposal. District two supervisor and board president Keith Lewis took a different approach with Wilson.
“Let me get with you, we can solve that problem,” Lewis said as he attempted to keep the peace.
Wilson and Knight raised their voices and tried to get the last word in before eventually calming down.
