WESSON — Magee pulled away in the second half to beat Wesson 36-25 in the first round of the 3A MHSAA playoffs. It was a tough way for the Cobras season to end.

Wesson finished 14-13 overall with a 4-4 district record. It was not their best performance. Seniors Sa’Niya Price, who finished with five points, and Ella Logan, who finished with four points put it a little more bluntly. “It sucks,” they both said after the game.

Wesson played Magee tight in the start of the game. At the 3:15 mark of the first quarter it was 4-4. Magee used its size to extend the lead to 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Cobras needed an offensive spark and could not find one.

At one point, the Cobras had forced a series of turnovers and jump balls with nothing to show for their defensive efforts. Logan finally scored a shot to end the eight minute plus scoring drought with 3:49 in the second quarter.

Magee went on a 6-0 run to close the half and take a 16-7 lead.

Wesson came out of halftime with a renewed spirit and cut into the Magee lead going on a 7-2 run. Wesson trailed by four with 4:20 left to go in the third quarter after hitting a couple of shots. The Cobras cut the deficit to two shortly after.

“We realized we needed to work harder, ” Logan said. “We didn’t play like ourselves. This was not us.”

Price said they knew it was their last high school game and they would have to work hard in the second half. Wesson didn’t play to the best of their ability. She added Magee was a good team and the Trojans  were bigger.

Magee finished out the third quarter with a series of three point plays thanks to drawing fouls in the paint. Wesson trailed 29-17 after three quarters.

“They were big and we had to play more physically,” Price said. “They can throw it over your head when they are taller and they know how to use their post players and post up.”

Wesson was unable to knock down the shots it needed to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter and lost by 11 points. A late layup on a breakaway for Wesson was a positive note to end on. Jerkeisha Edwards scored seven points.

Price’s athletic career at Wesson is over. She plans to get a degree in sonography so she can do ultrasounds. Logan will have softball season to look forward to and plans to attend Co-Lin to study physical therapy.

“I’m going to miss the team and the people,” Logan said. “We all just love each other so much.”
