BROOKHAVEN — Warm temperatures almost reached record highs this past week but the sunshine could give way to rain next week. The National Weather Service in Jackson forecasts rain to move in Tuesday and hang around Wednesday and Thursday.
Until then, sunny skies and high temperatures will be in the area. Friday is forecast to reach a high of 78 degrees, Saturday could see a high of 82 while Sunday’s high will cool off to 79. Monday’s forecast high will drop to 72 degrees.
NWS Jackson records show the area came a degree shy of record high temperatures when Tuesday’s temperature reached 81 degrees. Had it reached 82 degrees, it would have tied a record set in 1957.
Saturday’s temperature is forecast to be one degree cooler than the record of 83 degrees set on February 8, 1937. The forecasted high temperatures on Sunday and Monday will not come close enough to setting new temperature records.
While the warm temperatures have not set any records this week and likely will not set any new records, it is warmer than average temperatures of 38 to 60 degrees at this time in February.
The warm temperatures will give way to rain Monday as there is a 20 percent chance of showers. Tuesday will see a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms with an 80 percent chance of precipitation and rain will be likely Tuesday night.
Wednesday is forecast to see a 70 percent chance of precipitation dropping down to 60 percent chance of precipitation Wednesday night with showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Thursday is forecast to have a 40 percent chance of precipitation at this time.
