BROOKHAVEN — Firefighters soaked down stacks of pallets outside Brookhaven Milling Thursday afternoon. The pallets were part of a controlled burn, but due to exposure and gusting wind, the fire was extinguished by Brookhaven Fire Department.

Dark smoke was visible from the intersection of East Monticello Street and North First Street. Flames could be seen shooting up above the Brookhaven Milling warehouse roof line.

Drivers slowed down to catch a glimpse of what was happening as they passed by on North Second Street near East Congress Street.

Three pumper trucks, two squad fire trucks, the fire chief and Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency were on scene of the fire. Units cleared the scene around 1:30 p.m.

After the fire, Brookhaven Fire Chief Jeff Ainsworth confirmed a permit was issued for a controlled burn. He explained the fire department has some procedures which need to be addressed after changes in the last year.

“The ordinance on burn permits changed last year and we have to do a better job on our end,” Ainsworth said. “All burn piles will be inspected before a permit is issued.”
