Black History Month begins Saturday, Feb. 1, all across the United States. The Boys & Girls Club of Brookhaven will present radio essays each weekday for two weeks, beginning Monday, Feb. 3.
Since 1998, Melanie Lewis — director of the Lincoln County branch of the Boys & Girls Club — has taken students in grades 3-6 to radio station WCHJ 1470 AM. The Brookhaven Christian station is managed by Charles Tillman, who will host two students and Lewis each afternoon as the children read essays they have written on prominent black Americans. Tillman also asks the children questions about what they have read.
The segments will air 4:30-5 p.m. Feb. 3-7 and Feb. 10-14.
The Boys & Girls Club works with children from age 5 up through age 18.
The Clubs nationwide offer fun and enriching after-school programs and summer programs, sports leagues, STEM labs, summer camps, community engagement, and college scholarships. Through safe places, caring mentors and life-enhancing experiences, Clubs do “whatever it takes” for youth to reach their full potential.
