WESSON — It was fitting two Wesson seniors combined to score the lone goal on senior night. Wesson beat West Lincoln 1-0 in a hard fought match.
Senior Ben McKenzie connected with senior Christian Cayax-Marin with the first and only goal of the match in the second half. West Lincoln looked much improved from the first time the two sides played.
Wesson Head Coach Hank Jordan told his team that as they took a knee on the field after the match. Going in, he wanted the team to win by at least three goals to maintain playoff position over Bogue Chitto. West Lincoln played strong enough that they could beat Bogue Chitto and the Cobras could keep their playoff seed without going to goal differential.
“The win was big for the team with motivation as we go in and get ready for the playoffs,” McKenzie said. “I came to Wesson soccer in ninth grade and they helped me get better at the game and learn what it means to be a leader in this sport. I’m going to miss a lot. Its not just players, the team is a family. This team has it.”
He will attend Co-Lin and study business administration while playing tennis for the Wolves.
Cayax-Marin will attend Co-Lin as well where he hopes to make the soccer team. His goal was a crucial one.
“It felt surreal to score on senior night. I couldn’t have done it without the assist and us playing as a team,” Cayax-Marin said. “The win helps us with our confidence. It feels great but kind of sad it is almost over. I’m glad I’ve got to play with this team for the last six years. We will go into the playoffs as aggressive as we can and play one game at a time. Playing with these guys feels like I have a bunch of brothers.”
Wesson boys will play Loyd Star Friday night after the girls match. Girls play at 5:30 p.m.
