Barrett introduces bill to extend lodging tax repeal date

BROOKHAVEN — Amidst talk and legislation introduced by state leaders to cut income taxes, Sen. Jason Barrett introduced a bill to extend the repeal date for lodging taxes in Brookhaven. It is important to note this is a tax Brookhaven voters passed in 2014.
An extension for the repeal date has occurred in 2017, 2021 and this year. Barrett’s Senate Bill 2016 extended the repeal date to July 1, 2029. The bill was referred to the Local and Private Senate Committee.
The tax promotes tourism, parks and recreation and economic development in Brookhaven. The tax is 2 percent of the gross proceeds of room rentals for hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts.
SB2016 will need a 3/5ths majority vote to pass.
