LOYD STAR — Of the seven goals scored Monday night, two were own goals scored by Bogue Chitto as they fell 7-0 to Loyd Star. The own goals were the first two goals scored in the match which ended 10 minutes into the second half. .
From the quick start, Kaleb Waldrop scored two goals, Dalexis “Alex” Gonzalez scored one goal, Mason Smith scored a goal and Brody Thibodeaux scored a goal. It was Gonzalez’s goal that was perhaps the best one of the night.
After Loyd Star pressed for more goals, Gonzalez found himself on the edge of the box with enough space to fire a shot. His shot was perfectly placed and found the side netting. His teammates celebrated with him as he ran back to midfield smiling.
It might appear as a small moment in a match where Loyd Star dominated possession and created chances against Bogue Chitto. For the senior, it was a highlight in his final year. The buildup to the goal and others Tuesday night showcased the growth in Gonzalez.
Head Coach Jordan Lea said three years ago, Gonzalez joined the team and spoke little English.
“Being on the team has allowed him to grow tremendously in speaking English. It has helped him grow as a soccer player too,” Lea said. “He knew how to play but he was playing this year compared to when he first came, night and day. He has learned the importance of team chemistry and we know we can count on him. He helps the team win and understands the game well.”
Gonzalez has a closer connection with his teammates. Jamisyn Kelly acted as a translator for Gonzalez Monday night. Using a few words, they were able to say a lot about the team. A senior, Gonzalez said he is not ready to be done with soccer.
He will also tell you his knee doesn’t hurt him, only a little bit. The young man missed action last year after tearing a ligament in a game against Wesson. Lea said he is not sure which ligament it was but it required surgery.
“He had to take time off which was tough because soccer is life for him,” Lea said. “He stayed patient and trusted the doctors and therapists. He still hurts because he hasn’t had the surgery yet. He fights through the pain and he will leave it all on the field.”
The fighting mentality will be a needed one when Loyd Star plays Franklin County Thursday. A district championship is on the line and Loyd Star is in the drivers seat with a 6-0 record. Lea told his team they need to dominate the Bulldogs so there can be no complaints.
“I’m ready for Franklin County,” Gonzalez said.
