Brookhaven has lots of man’s best friends in need of loving homes

They say dogs are man’s best friend and for good reason. While I adore my cats, they do not always care to be around me, or loved by me and certainly do not listen. Jim on the other hand attaches himself to my hip, answers by call and will wedge himself between me and my wife in bed when let out of his crate in the morning.
I was the only friend Jim had when he first appeared on the front steps. He is always so overwhelmed with joy when I come through the front door no matter how long I’ve been gone and he has a funny little trot when we walk down the road or to the woods. The only time we come to blows is bath time.
As the holiday season is under way there are dozens of man’s best friends in need of a loving home and a friend of their own. If your child asks for a puppy this Christmas consider one from the animal shelter or perhaps adopt an older dog at the shelter. They can oftentimes be overlooked but are in need of a companion too. It is much easier to take care of a house trained dog than a new puppy, believe me.
There are several reasons why you should adopt an animal this year. First, it is starting to get cold and animals will need a warm home to survive. Brookhaven Animal Rescue League is only able to take care of so many animals as is the Brookhaven Pound.
Second, dogs, and of course cats, make great companions and friends. Jim has accompanied me to the woods a couple of times this year and it has been really fun watching him explore, run trails and on a few occasions get after deer or a rabbit.
I’m personally curious to see what kind of hunting dog he will become. A once slow day in the woods by myself has now become much more interesting with a dog to keep me company.
Third, dogs and cats can teach the heart and soul a great deal. It amazes me how quickly they can forgive, how they love unconditionally and how content they can be.
For example, my cat Bruno has slept every night the last three weeks in a Lacrosse Boot Box. He is my hunting buddy so it is fitting he would be content with a hunting boot box. My other cat Penny loves to curl up on a blanket and sleep all day. Jim is content as long as he is curled up with me or my wife.
