BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns there is a risk of severe weather in southwest Mississippi Sunday into Sunday evening. Cold weather could settle in over Lincoln County in the days following the storms.
NWS Jackson forecasts severe storms are possible with damaging wind gusts and hail up to a quarter in size. Tornadoes are possible as a low pressure system moves through the region. Winds will be strong Sunday with 20 to 25 mph sustained wind speeds and gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph. These winds could cause weak trees and tree limbs to break and fall.
Following the storms, low temperatures will drop to 27 degrees Sunday night and are forecast to drop further to 23 degrees Monday through Wednesday. High temperatures Monday through Thursday will be the low 40s.
NWS Jackson forecasts the severe weather nearly a week after 28 tornadoes touched down across the state, three of those tornadoes made a path through Lincoln County. One was an EF3 tornado which touched down in Franklin County and cut up towards Caseyville, another was an EF1 in the Loyd Star community off of Jackson Liberty Drive and another EF1 touched down in East Lincoln.
There are additional survey plans for other storm damage which could lead to more tornadoes being identified in Mississippi from the outbreak of storms on Dec. 28. One of the survey plans includes parts of Lincoln and Lawrence County.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reports 25 homes and three farms suffered damage in preliminary damage reports from the outbreak of severe storms on Dec. 28.
