Mr. Wells, 87, of Brookhaven, Mississippi passed away on January 1, 2025 at the Jackson Veterans’ Home. He was born in Heuck’s Retreat community on October 20, 1937 to Johnnie and Pauline Haley Wells.
George loved people; he was a jokester and never met a stranger. He found joy in music – especially gospel music – and many might remember him traveling and singing with the Heuck’s Retreat Men’s Quartet. He was a man who had his priorities in order; God was first, followed by his family; George loved his kids and grandbabies. He provided for his family, working for the Forestry Commission and the Mississippi Department of Transportation for over 25 years. He loved his country and its flag; as a young man he attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and then joined the United States military, serving in both the Army and Air Force. He was an amazing father and grandfather who has left behind a legacy of love and service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Wayman Stuart Wells; two sisters, Laverne Norwood and Maureen Richardson; and a brother, Arthur Wells.
Survivors include his daughter, Georgia Anne Wells (Michelle Bagby); grandchildren, Stuart Wayman Wells, Jr. “Chip” and Emily Wells Smith (Jeremy), Sara Burkett (Corey), and Hadley Wells Harborth; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Steve Wells; a life-long friend, Stacy Wooldridge; four very special nieces, Kathryn, Karon, Sharon, and Renee; along with extended family and friends.
