Drought conditions improve for half of Lincoln County

BROOKHAVEN — Much needed rainfall seems to have helped alleviate some of the drought conditions in Lincoln County. It is possible the rain received Tuesday night and Wednesday could bold well in next week’s drought map.
According to the US Drought Monitor, 47.58 percent of Lincoln County is now considered abnormally dry and 52.42 percent of the county is in moderate drought. Last week, 91 percent of the county was in moderate drought.
According to Drought.Gov, this past October was Lincoln County’s eighth driest October in the past 130 years of recorded history. Year to date, this has been the 65th driest year in the past 130 years with Lincoln County’s rainfall around 0.59 inches above normal.
Drought.Gov does predict the drought conditions will continue to persist for the next month and season.
In the past two days, Lincoln County received anywhere from 0.25 inches to 1.5 inches of rain depending on the area. According to the Keetch-Byram Drought Index, Lincoln County needs about four to five inches of rain to return to normal moisture levels.
Some rain could come next week. Monday night has an 80 percent chance of showers and there is a 60 percent chance of rain Tuesday.
