BROOKHAVEN — Former Lincoln Sheriff K-9 officer Chris Picou died on Nov. 10 from an injury at his hunting camp. The Madison Police Department confirmed in a press release their K-9 and administration supervisor died.

Picou was a Lieutenant in Madison and served in the metro area for several decades. From 2012 to 2016, he served as the Undersheriff in Hinds County. He also served as a K-9 supervisor in Rankin County.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Picou served in Lincoln County for about five years under Sheriff Lynn Boyte. Rushing added he worked on patrol while Picou was the K-9 officer from May 1998 to 2003.

“We have stayed in good contact. We have been friends ever since, he was a great guy,” Rushing said. “We are all in shock. He has been working with K-9s for a while. That is what he has done for the past 25 years. He probably trained half of the dogs in the state.”

The last time Rushing saw Picou in person was in August for fallen officer Troy Floyd’s funeral in Brookhaven. He said they had texted each other in the weeks since Floyd’s funeral.

“He always said that Lincoln County was his second home. He was a stand up guy and meant what he said he would do. I remember several times on patrol he was always there to help us,” Rushing said. “He was a great guy all the way around. He loved law enforcement and working K-9s. He loved his kids. He is going to be truly missed.”

Rushing said deputies will try to attend the funeral.

Picou’s visitation and funeral service is scheduled for Thursday at Broadmoor Baptist Church at 1531 Highland Colony Parkway, Madison. Madison Police Department reports his visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon and the funeral service from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday. He will be buried at Monterey First Baptist Church at  5555 LA-129, Monterey, Louisiana.
