Answer 1: Yes.

Earlier this month, the City announced that Arrow Disposal (ADSI) garbage cans would be collected, and this was expected to be completed by Monday, Oct. 14.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, many residents wondered why they still had blue cans sitting at the curb waiting to be removed.

“They are out there doing it,” Mayor Joe Cox said Tuesday evening at the regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen.

His statement came in answer to a question from Alderman-at-large Don Underwood: “Didn’t you say they were getting those blue cans? Because they’re still out there.”

City Inspector David Fearn echoed the mayor’s assurance that workers were making the rounds collecting the cans.

Homeowners should not place the smaller, blue recycling cans out to the curb for pick-up, however, Ward 4 Alderman Jeff Henning said. Those cans were provided by the City, and now belong to the homeowners.

Question 2: Is my trash in the new green cans being collected?

Answer 2: Yes.

Just a very few residents have complained about pickup since Waste Management took over the City’s collection contract on Oct. 1. Most of these problems stem from two issues, Underwood said — both of which need to be addressed by the property owner.

“A lot of the cans are turned the wrong way, or are right up next to a bricked mailbox,” he said. “Right now, Waste Management is getting out and taking care of it, but they will soon not be doing that.”

Each 96-gallon cart was delivered with a door hanger that explained service guidelines.

“No other containers can be serviced,” the note stated. “No material outside your cart will be collected.”

Cars should be placed “at least 3 feet apart and 3 feet away from any obstacles (trees, cars, mailboxes, etc.) to allow the automatic arm to lift and empty the cart. Place the wheels of the cart toward your house.”

Carts should be at the curb ready to be emptied by 7 a.m. on the appropriate collection day.

“The trucks have cameras to show what they have and have not picked up,” Mayor Cox said. “This is their second week, and they’re doing a good job. Just give them a chance.”
