BROOKHAVEN —A storm is brewing in the Atlantic Ocean according to the National Hurricane Center. The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season has produced 13 named storms thus far with nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
According to the National Hurricane Center, a well defined area of low pressure is present in the mid-Atlantic Ocean and is anticipated to move westward in the coming days. This storm is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms according to the NHC. Currently the storm is in a dry environment and is not forecast to develop into a tropical cyclone in the coming days and thus has a 10 percent chance of formation in the next 48 hours.
However, the seven day outlook is much more favorable for cyclone formation with 60 percent chance at this time. As the system moves westward, it could encounter warmer waters and favorable environmental conditions for development. A tropical depression could form later this week.
Another disturbance south of the Yucatan Peninsula has a 10 percent chance of tropical cyclone formation in the next seven days and may bring localized rainfall to the region of Central America.
Neither of the last two hurricanes which moved through the Gulf of Mexico brought any rainfall to southwest Mississippi. At this time, there is no chance of rainfall forecast for Lincoln County through next Sunday.
NWS Jackson does not forecast drought conditions to worsen in Lincoln County although 98.86 percent of the county is considered abnormally dry at this time. Abnormally dry conditions are the first stage of drought development.
