BROOKHAVEN — The Brookhaven Veterans of Foreign Wars Capt. Danny Entrican Post 2618 announced they are collecting donations to take to flood victims in Asheville, North Carolina. The Associated Press reported death tolls from flooding in Appalachia following heavy rainfall in Hurricane Helene have topped 130.
Heavy rainfall from Helene washed away homes, businesses, roads and bridges. AP reports an estimated 600 people are unaccounted for as of Monday afternoon.
Scott Smith, New Sight Volunteer Fire Department Chief and a veteran, said the VFW will have a trailer in Brookhaven at 10 a.m. Friday to take donations to Asheville, North Carolina. Cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, baby items and non-perishable foods. Smith said wipes are what they are looking for.
Brookhaven’s VFW is located at 728 Industrial Park Road.
