MONTICELLO — Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office reported the human remains recovered earlier this month were identified as those of a missing man. The remains were found on Sept. 1 and sent to the Mississippi Medical Examiner’s Office. 

According to a press release from Lawrence County Sheriff Ryan Everett, the remains are those of Gregory Varnado. His body was found in a burned vehicle found by a property owner on Sept. 1. Varnado went missing on August 17, 2024. 

The Mississippi Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the remains were Varnado’s through DNA comparison and analysis. The cause and manner of death at this time remain undetermined. 

Varnado’s disappearance and death remain under investigation.
