Talking trash transition with the City of Brookhaven

Beginning Sept. 30, Waste Management will take over the household garbage contract for the City of Brookhaven, as well as Lincoln County.
Until then, Arrow Disposal Services Inc. (ADSI) is contracted to continue pickup. Multiple citizens of the city are upset that ADSI has not been picking up their trash, however. Some say they have gone weeks without a pickup.
Both Public Works Director Kris Xifos and Mayor Joe Cox have told the public that ADSI has lost multiple employees due to the coming change, and have brought in workers from Meridian and Natchez to help meet the demand. City workers are also helping as they are able.
Waste Management Senior Public Sector Representative David Holloway said he is looking forward to the new contract beginning.
“We look forward to coming back to Brookhaven, taking over and collecting garbage for the City,” Holloway said. “We are very happy to be here, and in Lincoln County, as well.”
Residents should be on the lookout for postcards to arrive in their mailboxes in the coming week from Waste Management, he said.
“The cards will tell you all the information and your collection day,” said Holloway. “If you have questions, call the number that is on the postcard, and was also on the hanger included with your new can.”
That phone number is 866-604-5062, and can also be called for extra carts at an additional fee.
The green cans are the only carts Waste Management will pickup, and only trash placed in the 96-gallon carts will be collected.
“Waste Management has the most modern trash collection in the nation,” said Solid Waste Department employee Kayla Watts. “The company will be working to make Brookhaven and Lincoln County cleaner.”
Carts should be 3-feet away from any other obstacle, with the wheeled side away from the street, and at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on collection day. Garbage will be collected weekly.
