Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents cited six subjects for alleged alligator hunting violations on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 in Tensas and Madison parishes. Two of those men are Brookhaven residents.

On Aug. 31, agents cited Ronald Smith, 57, and Cody Wallace, 40, both of Brookhaven, and Austin Smith, 28, of Jayess, for taking an alligator during a closed season in Tensas Parish.

On Sept. 1, agents cited Hunter Rich, 28, of Pell City, Alabama and Jacob Risher, 29, of Pearl for taking an alligator during a closed season in Tensas Parish. Agents also cited Larry Newell, 66, of Raymond for taking an alligator during a closed season in Madison Parish.

Agents setup surveillance from different locations that overlooked the entire length of Yucatan Lake in Tensas Parish. Agents observed Ronald Smith, Wallace and Austin Smith harvest an 11-foot alligator on Aug. 31. Agents then observed Rich and Risher harvest a 10-foot alligator on Sept. 1.

In a separate case, agents setup surveillance on Eagle Lake and observed Newell harvest a 7-foot alligator.

Tensas and Madison parishes are in the west zone for alligator season and the season is open for 60 calendar days that did not start until Sept. 4.

Taking alligators during a closed season carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.

Violators may also face civil restitution totaling $375 for the replacement value for each of the three illegally taken alligator.

Agents participating in the Tensas Parish cases are Sgt. Josh Harris, Sgt. Clint Branton, Agent Caleb Kennedy, Agent Mollyann Moore, Agent Ernest Reynolds and Sgt. Michael Garrity. Agents participating in the Madison Parish case are Sgt. John Hendrix and Corporal Johnny Wilson.
