A taste of fall

His body quivered, either from the cool morning or excitement as the world came to life. It won’t be long now, I wanted to tell the dog as he looked around.

Wood ducks will soon whistle overhead at first light, squirrels will scamper through the leaves and I’ll be halfway up a tree waiting for a deer to walk by. Fall is coming but it is not here yet.

Right now, we are enjoying the brief hopes of Autumn that is to come. Back home in Arkansas the windy August days quickly ushered in fall in late September, by October the grass was dead. In Mississippi, I’ve learned these few hours each week of “fall’ weather is really a false fall in terms of weather. Some days in December are hotter than our early days of turkey season in March, and the grass is green for most of the year.

I still enjoy those chilly mornings before the sun bakes Lincoln County to a crisp or the afternoon rain turns the world into a sauna. My body will eventually loathe the chilly mornings during the “Ber” months.

Plant wise, fall has begun as leaves begin to fall but the first day of Autumn is on the Autumn Equinox which falls on Sept. 22, 2024.

Look around you, and you might notice a transition in the natural landscape as fall and winter approach. The same transition might be noticed in the grocery store or your favorite beer purchase point. Pumpkin themed goods start to popup and Oktoberfest brews appear.

If you are a soup lover like me, you might be able to convince others the weather is in fact cool enough for soup. Any day is a good day for soup, the same concept applies to ice cream, coffee, bacon and pizza.

For those who associate smells with memories, there is a certain odor in the air as the acorns begin to fall and a hint of campfire smoke mixes in. Personally, the smell takes me back to my sophomore year of college. A hoodie, Hank Jr. blaring and a pork chop sizzling in the skillet. Oh how I’m ready for fall.
