Readers brainstorm ideas for what Brookhaven needs

BROOKHAVEN – The Daily Leader received 374 Facebook comments on a column published last week asking about “What Brookhaven needs,” as of noon Monday. Readers brainstormed ideas for potential businesses if anyone is willing to invest in an idea. 

By far the most common idea for what Brookhaven needs was a bowling alley, with the thought mentioned 27 times in comments. Broadly, the idea could be categorized under “something for the kids.” 

Readers similarly shared they would like a game room about 10 times, and a handful of commenters expressed support for a water park, trampoline park, minigolf, or go-kart track. Around seven readers wrote comments stating they would like a YMCA or community center. A couple of readers said they would like playgrounds in safer areas.

At the same time, readers shared ideas which could be broadly categorized as “something for the adults.” Dave and Busters, a pool hall, and sling exercises were common ideas shared. One reader thought a casino would be nice. 

 

Shopping ideas

It should come as no surprise people still want another grocery store in addition to Sullivans, Walmart and ALDI, which is coming soon. A dozen readers wrote they would like to see another grocery store in Brookhaven. 

Readers additionally stated they would like an outdoor mall, children clothing store for boys, clothing stores or department stores in general, an art supply store, a target and a sporting goods store with more selection. Brookhaven has several local options for sporting goods with 601 Sports, Wand Seed Store and Co-Lin Feed and Seed. 

Three readers specifically mentioned the need to support local businesses in Brookhaven. 

 

We need a steakhouse

Readers continue to share they would like to have a dedicated steakhouse in Brookhaven. The idea was shared directly in comments or in replies 21 times. Texas Roadhouse being one of the more common franchises mentioned. 

Not too far behind, readers said they would like fast food options 16 times. One of the newer requests of readers is for a Wingstop to come to Brookhaven. 

A handful of readers thought an Italian restaurant, a new pizza place, donuts and a nice sit down restaurant would be good. Ideas shared one time by readers were for a Greek restaurant, a sports bar or a frozen yogurt business. 

 

Serious thoughts

Readers thought about some more serious topics too. They expressed interest in more affordable housing or new apartments. Six readers said they felt Brookhaven needed more industry to keep up with other parts of Mississippi. 

In conjunction with industry, readers shared they would like to see a vo-tech school. It should be noted Co-Lin Community College offers programs for career and technical education. 

Infrastructure is a concern as some readers suggested road repairs or a stoplight at the intersection of US84 and MS-583. One reader went as far as to suggest Brookhaven does not need a round-about, with other readers agreeing. 

Some readers suggested a shelter or home for the homeless and those seeking recovery from addictions. A reader shared they would like to see Veteran services. 

One reader said they would like to see more fathers in homes which led to discussion about the fathers needing to be good men in the home. 

A reader simply said that Brookhaven needed God. 

Several readers said they would like to see accountability of officials. Eight readers stated in various ways they would like to see a crackdown on crime. Three readers suggested the need for a juvenile justice or detention center. One of the leading concerns of readers was security and safety.
