MBI continues to investigate deadly shooting

SUMMIT — Lincoln County resident Troy Floyd, who ran for Lincoln County Sheriff in 2023, was shot and killed in the line of duty Thursday afternoon. Floyd and two other officers were shot and injured and the suspect was killed in an incident in Summit.
Floyd graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1991 and lived in the Clear Branch community.
He worked as a jailer, patrol officer and parole agent with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Wesson and Summit Police Departments. His career in law enforcement spanned 27 years.
David Taylor, Pike County Coroner, said the identity of the suspect who was killed could not be released. The investigation is now in the hands of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. The Daily Leader will provide an update when MBI identifies the suspect.
He gave a brief statement Thursday evening about Floyd.
“We have Floyd’s family and local law enforcement in our hearts and in our prayers. Especially for his family,” Taylor said.
What we know
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Summit Police officers were working a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue, when a car approached and a passenger presented a weapon, shooting at the officers. Floyd, who ran for Lincoln County Sheriff in 2023, was struck and killed by the gunfire.
Two McComb Police officers arrived and exchanged gunfire with the subject. Both officers received non-life-threatening injuries, and the subject was fatally shot. The officers were identified as Joey Roberts and Tyler Harvey. Officer Roberts was wounded in one leg and was unable to return fire.
It is unknown what led to the confrontation, which occurred near Piggly Wiggly supermarket on Hwy. 51, one block from Summit’s Robb Street.
MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
Lincoln County Baptist Association will host a prayer rally Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. for Floyd at Easthaven’s cross.
