Readers react to presidential debate

ATLANTA — Donald Trump, Republican, and Joe Biden, Democrat, faced off in the first presidential debate of 2024 on CNN Thursday night. Robert Kennedy Jr. held his own debate in California live streamed on X, formerly known as Twitter, Thursday night.
Readers shared their thoughts on how the debate went in response to a Facebook post shared by The Daily Leader. The post has 26 comments as of 2:30 p.m. Friday.
In the debate, Biden stumbled over a few words and looked dazed and confused on TV. Trump bullied his way through questions attacking Biden and the administration while not answering the questions asked.
One spat between the two was over who was better at golf. A few commenters pointed to the moment in their response to The Daily Leader’s question on Facebook.
“It is sad that we have come to have to choose between two old men who are arguing about golf scores,” Milton West said. “Our country will survive this. Much prayer and support from the Lord will lead us through this difficult time. Just remember this. The Lord already knows who will be the next president.”
West was not the only one who pointed to God in their response to the debate. LaTonya Dunningan Tucker asked for God to give Americans better choices. She mentioned Trump’s recent felony conviction and Biden’s health.
“People better start looking at God for everything because putting your trust in man is not it,” Tucker said.
Some readers felt Trump won the debate. While others voiced concerns about Biden’s age and mental capacity to be president for another term.
“Trump won by a landslide, Biden will probably be replaced with a more liberal candidate but who can know,” Steve Laird said.
One reader hinted they thought the debate was set up as a scheme. It is important to note that neither candidate is the official party nominee, just presumptive nominees.
“I feel like the Democrats allowed this to happen because they have something up their sleeve for when their convention takes place,” Lisa Wicker said.
One reader thought Trump lied in the debate while another thought the debate showed a risk of division with Trump. CNN did not have a live fact check on TV for the claims made by Trump or Biden.
“Trump lie lie lie and is going to start hate between black and white again,” Jeanette Henderson said.
