BROOKHAVEN — First Responders are working a chaotic Friday afternoon. Two wrecks occurred within 30 minutes of each other.
A single vehicle wrecked Friday afternoon around 12:45 p.m. on US 51 S in front of J&L’s Tire & Auto, before catching fire in the median. The smell of burnt oil and other automotive fluids was pungent. Firefighters swept up debris to clear the roadway.
One person was in the Nissan Altima, and suffered undisclosed injuries. The man was transported by ambulance to King’s Daughter Medical Center.
Brookhaven Police officers and Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies responded, along with Brookhaven Fire Department.
By 1 p.m., the fire was extinguished and by 1:20 p.m. the roadway was back open.
A second wreck occurred on Jackson Liberty Drive Southwest just south of Gum Grove Road. Brookhaven Fire Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, KDMC and Zetus Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash. Usually, Brookhaven Fire Department runs wreck calls in the county if there is entrapment.
We will provide more updates as they become available.
