BROOKHAVEN — A Lincoln County man who was arrested and faces capital murder and kidnapping charges after a woman and child were found dead, and another child was recovered alive last week could be connected to a significant missing persons case. Additionally, a Lincoln County grand jury failed to indict him for sexual battery charge in February 2023.

36-year-old Daniel Callihan, was captured in Jackson on Boozier Drive after a chase, according to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade last Thursday.

Callihan’s sister Dixie Hemphill, from Bogue Chitto, alleged in an article published on Unfiltered with Kiran, a news website, that Callihan told her he was involved in the disappearance of missing Bogue Chitto man Jonathan Estes. Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Hemphill reported the information to them and they took her to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.

MBI is the primary investigator on the Jonathan Estes case and investigated the claims. On Tuesday,  MBI released a statement on Callihan’s alleged involvement.

“The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation reviewed the statements and reports submitted by the sister of Daniel Callihan regarding his connection to a missing person in 2018. This is an open investigation and MBI is still seeking evidence corroborating Callihan’s involvement.  Anyone with any information can submit it to MBITIPS@dps.ms.gov.”

Rushing said Callihan bounced around making him hard to find. He was arrested in December 2022 on charges of sexual battery. He was booked into the Lincoln County jail as homeless. A warrant was issued for his sexual battery arrest in June 2022.

“He was arrested in Jackson then. He had been staying there,” Rushing said. “It was presented to grand jury and grand jury no billed it meaning there was not enough to indict him for it. It was fully investigated and we even had his sister testify in grand jury. We did our part in that.”
