Weekend could get hot

BROOKHAVEN — Temperatures could be hot for Brookhaven’s Juneteenth parade Saturday. It may be the beginning of above average temperatures.

Saturday will get close to triple digits but fall just short with a forecasted high of 97 degrees. The record high set for Brookhaven on June 15 was 103 degrees set in 1911. NWS Jackson warns the heat index could get to 105 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

Each afternoon will be a heat stress threat. People can fight the heat by staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities and taking frequent breaks if working outdoors.

A solid chance of rain could cool things off Sunday through Tuesday. There is a 20 percent chance of showers Sunday, 70 percent chance of rain Monday and a 40 percent chance of rain Tuesday and Wednesday.

National Weather Service’s long term forecast shows there is a solid chance of above average temperatures and precipitation totals over the next couple weeks for southwest Mississippi. The three month long term forecast shows 40 to 50 percent chance of above average precipitation in southwest Mississippi with a 50 to 60 percent chance of above average temperatures.

If you are looking for a way to cool off Brookhaven Parks and Recreation offers three splash pads for the public to cool off and for children to have some fun.

One splash pad is found at the City Park located on 365 Hartman Street. Bi-Centennial Park offers a splash pad at 202 Main Street and Bethel Park on Fulton Street has a splash pad.

Splash Pads are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. everyday including the weekends until September 30.
