High temperatures, thunderstorms in afternoon forecast

BROOKHAVEN — Temperatures are starting to heat up and so is the heat index for Lincoln County Monday. The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures to be around 90 degrees but with humidity the heat index could reach 98 degrees.
Thunderstorms are also in the forecast for Monday afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms could move through the region around 2 p.m. and after. There is a 40 percent chance of rain in Lincoln County. A north wind will blow around 5 mph and maybe the breeze could provide relief.
Monday afternoon’s heat index could reach 98 degrees at about 2 p.m. with a relative humidity of 58 percent.
Tuesday and Wednesday will be fairly cool in comparison to the weekend forecast. Temperatures will reach highs of 87 on Tuesday and 88 on Wednesday. Low temperatures tonight will drop to 65 degrees and 63 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday night.
Thursday and Friday will be full of sunshine and temperatures reaching a high of 93 and 95 degrees. Saturday will be the hottest day this week with a forecasted high of 96 degrees and a 20 percent chance of rain. Be sure to hydrate and cool off.
Monday’s high temperature is just outside the average range of 67 to 87 degrees on June 10. The record high on June 10 in Brookhaven was set at 101 degrees in 1953. The record low for the day was set at 53 degrees in 1930.
