HEUCKS RETREAT — A pack of about 15 dogs were left abandoned at a trailer near the intersection of Heucks Retreat and Little Bahalia Road this week. Lincoln County resident Derryn Hamilton said the dogs were causing problems and spreading mange. She was worried about their welfare.
Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said as of Thursday afternoon there were only three dogs left at the trailer. He added the dogs would not go near the officers but food was out everywhere.
Hamilton said her neighbor moved away and abandoned the property. The neighbor had left open the trailer doors and poured dog food on the ground and left. Trash is now all over the place along with feces.
“There was a rescue girl who has picked up most of the dogs to take them to a shelter,” Hamilton said. “We called everyone for a few days. This girl Evangaline Cook has been out there and catching them. She is just 19.”
Cook is with Piper’s Paws Rescue and Grooming. Hamilton said she and her neighbors donated to Cook’s cause.
Lincoln County does not have an animal control officer. Often concerned citizens have to help get abandoned animals to shelters like the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League.
Rushing said deputies will continue to check on the situation.
