Rain falling in Brookhaven, forecast warns of severe storm risk

BROOKHAVEN — Rain is falling in downtown Brookhaven Thursday afternoon. The National Day of Prayer ended by 1 p.m. before rain started falling at 2 p.m.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service warn of severe storms Thursday afternoon. Rain chances will spike to 60 percent later today, fall to 30 percent tonight before jumping back up to 70 percent Friday.
Isolated severe storms could move into southwest Mississippi from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Brookhaven has a chance of showers and thunderstorms from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and another chance of thunderstorms after 4 p.m.
Potential hazards with these storms will include damaging wind gusts, hail up to a quarter in size and tornadoes can not be ruled out. NWS Jackson reports 20 tornadoes have touched down this year in Mississippi. The last outbreak spawned 13 tornadoes on April 9 and April 10.
At this time no warnings or watches are in effect for Lincoln County.
Enterprise baseball and Wesson softball are scheduled to play the first game of their playoff series this evening. Friday’s forecast of rain actually moved the game 1 of Enterprise vs Taylorsville to Thursday with game 2 set for Saturday.
