Believe it or not, every person is born with a set of talents, skills and a heart to fulfill a calling. Some people aspire to be teachers, others want to be mechanics or perhaps become an artist and feel called to walk down that path. 

A calling is more than a job or career though. It can be a way to serve others. Monday morning I was reminded of the calling some people have to serve this country and how inspiring it is. Bryce Smith is a senior at Brookhaven High School who was appointed to the Naval Academy Monday. He has dreamed of serving his country for quite some time.

Proud teachers, friends and family members were at Brookhaven High School to celebrate the next chapter in Bryce’s future Monday. The first time Bryce told me about his calling to serve was in October when King’s Daughter Medical Center named him the comeback player of the year. His dream was to go to the Naval Academy to serve this country. He overcame a devastating knee injury his junior year and had to patiently wait for his chance to go to the Naval Academy. 

A few weeks ago, his dream looked uncertain of coming true when he signed with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to play soccer. Monday morning, he had to break the news to his MGCCC coach that he would be going to the service academy. He is ready to serve and I hope people find that inspiring. 

I believe everyone is called in one capacity or another to something bigger than themselves. It is not a matter of if you will be called but when or what you will be called to do. All you need to do is be ready to go. 

Lincoln County has several opportunities for people to answer calls of service. If you love animals, Brookhaven Animal Rescue League is always in need of help. We have a community of people who are faced with food insecurity and we also have ministries such as Brookhaven Outreach Ministry and local food pantries who can help. 

One of the best ways to get involved in a community and to serve is through your local church or local clubs and organizations. Lincoln County is home to eight volunteer fire departments which is another great way to serve the community especially during the day. 

Stories in the Bible have shown me time and time again that the people God called to do great things were just normal people he equipped. Again, all you have to do is go, answer your calling.
