BROOKHAVEN — Goin’ to Town Car Show is not the only event in downtown Brookhaven Saturday. The Honey Pot II owner Wanza McGuffie said she will host a book signing at her store Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Brookhaven native Vondell White Ashmore authored three books and will sign copies at 110 East Cherokee Street. 

“The Honey Pot II is thrilled to host this smart, talented, exceptional lady in the promotion of her books,” McGuffie said. “I guarantee that you will enjoy each one of them.” 

About the author

Ashmore graduated from Fair Oak Springs High School in 1953. Fair Oak Springs High School was a Lincoln County School which closed in 1960. 

She married her husband Talmadge and moved to Baton Rouge to attend Louisiana State University. She majored in music education while Talmadge majored in accounting. Vondell used her degree to teach private piano lessons. She was on staff for the Gospel Singers of America Summer Music School from 1958 to 1970 and taught voice, piano, bass, fiddle and music theory. 

The Ashmores are both members of the Hank Jones & Friends Band, a house band for the Old South Jamboree in Walker, Louisiana for many years. 

In addition to music, Vondell is an avid needlepoint artist and quilter. She served as the Southwest Volunteer Regional Director for AARP from 1996 to 2001. The Ashmores moved to North Alabama in 2007 where Talmadge passed away in 2012.
