Supervisors: Work to solve trash problem needs to start now

BROOKHAVEN — District 4 Supervisor Eli Ferguson reminded his fellow Lincoln County Supervisors to not let trash pickup issues sneak up on them at Tuesday’s docket meeting. Arrow Disposal Services Inc.is supposed to report to the board of supervisors every 30 days.
District 5 Supervisor Doug Falvey said the company hasn’t come back to see them in February. According to The Daily Leader, the last report from ADSI came December 18, 2023.
ADSI trash pickup service started off good when the contract started but took a nose dive in 2023. The company blamed equipment issues and high turnover for trash pickup delays and missed pickups.
“We still don’t have a report. Misses got better but there are still issues,” Falvey said.
Ferguson said the trash pickup in his district was a mess last week. Lincoln County Administrator Daniel Calcote suggested the county set up a work session with Brookhaven to start looking ahead to the trash contract which expires on September 30, 2024.
“Let’s come together and see what kind of expectations we have as a group,” Calcote said.
District 2 Supervisor Keith Lewis agreed with the suggestion and said “Let’s make sure our contract is where it is supposed to be.”
District 4 supervisor John Hart added the county needed to make sure there are penalties in the contract for poor service. Falvey agreed.
“They think if they miss one and they go back and get it then it is okay,” Falvey said. “But it isn’t. We shouldn’t have had the phone call in the first place.”
Ferguson said he has one road in his district which has been missed eight times since January. Falvey said he had a road off of MS-550 where trash wasn’t picked up for a while.
Lewis reminded the board the transfer station is up for bid as well. Falvey said he anticipates ADSI coming back with a bid increase. It is not something the supervisors want to happen.
“The public will eat our lunch,” Falvey said. “We need to have a serious discussion about this. We need to do some sort of workshop or work session next month. Let’s get it together.”
Calcote told the board he thought starting early was good. District 1 Supervisor Jerry Wilson agreed.
“It is best to do it now,” he said.
