- PHOTO BY BRETT CAMPBELL Easthaven Christian Childcare & Kindergarten student Peyton West, with help from his mom Kaitlyn Wilson, signs his name on the base of the 150-foot cross to be raised at Easthaven Baptist Church Feb. 27.
As a 150-foot-tall cross is being prepared to be raised at Easthaven Baptist Church, the pastor of the Brookhaven congregation invites any interested people to join the effort with just a few minutes and a permanent marker.
Permanent markers are on the concrete foundation around the dark red metal base that will be inside the cross once it is raised. The cross is scheduled to be raised at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, so Easthaven pastor Hal Kitchings asks anyone who wants to add their names or favorite Bible verses to the post to come by noon on Monday, Feb. 26.
“Anyone who wants to can sign their name,” said Kitchings. “You can write your name, maybe a favorite [Bible] passage, the date, perhaps — whatever God leads you to do. Just don’t take up too much space, so we can include as many people as possible.”
The cross will be formally dedicated in a Good Friday service.
