Stanley Layton Hay passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023. Stan was born on September 6, 1944, in Crowley, LA, to the late McIver Hay and Minta Myers Hay. He grew up moving around South Louisiana, as his father worked in the oil industry. He spoke fondly of the time spent with his brother, Dr. Mack Hay, and sister, Maudra Cozzi, in remote locations such as Grand Isle and Pointe à la Hache, LA. He attended high school in Port Sulphur and graduated from high school in Morgan City, LA. During his high school days, he excelled athletically, winning the state championship in shot-put and being awarded a scholarship to Louisiana State University to play football. He spoke highly of playing football for LSU and living in the athletic dorms under the stadium in Death Valley. Unfortunately, his football career was cut short, as he was injured in the final game of the season. He went on to graduate from LSU and work in various industries as a human resource manager, first in Morgan City, and then in Brookhaven, MS. He lived in Brookhaven for over 30 years. In that time, he made an impact on hundreds of lives through his jobs at McLane Southern and Croft Metals. He made dear friends, and always loved telling a good story, often numerous times. Those around him knew him by his kindness, gentleness, and sense of humor, with a laugh that would be heard around the block. His 4 children were the pride of his life — Elizabeth, Becky, Katy, and Billy Hay. He often put his own wants and needs aside to take care of his children, and make sure they had every opportunity in life. He taught lessons through story telling about his family — whether it was the legendary work ethic of his father or the unfailing love and kindness of his mother, there was always an illustration to be passed on.
He is preceded in death by his parents, McIver Hay and Minta Myers Hay, and his brother, Mack Hay. He is survived by his sister, Maudra Cozzi, his daughters, Elizabeth Hay, Katy Hay, Becky Hay and her wife Natalie Preissinger, and his son, Billy Hay and his wife Diane. He has 4 beautiful granddaughters, Charlotte, Lucy, Emma, and Ava, who will miss PaPa dearly.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 2, 2023, at Faith Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven, MS, from 9-11 a.m. A memorial service will immediately follow. A graveside service will be held the following day on Tuesday, October 3, at 10 a.m. in Crowley, LA, at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family appreciates your prayers and support at this time.
