BROOKHAVEN — She smiled at the end of a counter at Brookhill Friday and volunteered to be the subject of The Dart without any hesitation. A Brookhaven native, Delilah Barnett has spent her summer hanging out at Brookhill on Natchez Avenue close to where The Dart landed Friday morning.

August 8th will bring the summer to an end for Barnett when she returns to the halls and classrooms at Brookhaven Elementary School. Her third grade teacher this year is Mrs. Barnett, no relation.

Barnett has hung out around Brookhill because her nana and pops work there.

“I got to do all types of things this summer. We would go to the water parks,” Barnett said. “We went to the fair and roller skating. I’ve stayed here a lot at Brookhill swimming and playing on the playground.”

One of her favorite memories this summer was riding the tilt-a-whirl at the Brookhaven Exchange Club Fair which finishes up Saturday.

While summer is coming to an end, she is excited to return to school. Her favorite subject is reading because she can “Find out stuff,” and books are “interesting.”

One of her favorite books is a mystery book where a girl goes around solving mysteries and finding clues. Spooky stories are her other favorite genre. Barnett said “I like spooky stories because they are fun. I don’t get scared.”

September will be a month to remember for Barnett. She is going to Disney World with her family and looks forward to having a lightsaber made in either pink or blue. Barnett ran over to a counter and whipped out a plastic green lightsaber with a grin.

She wore a pink shirt with a flower and the words “Always keep growing.” Barnett is growing and dreaming as only a third grader can. In addition to reading, She likes art and spends time drawing or painting whatever she wants.

“I want to be a tattoo artist when I grow up,” she said.
